Paremiologists and anthropologists outside the world of biblical studies have long been aware of the importance of contradictions among vernacular proverbs (Mieder 1982: Index, s.v. "contradiction"). In keeping with the functional, situation-related character of the genre (Kirshenblatt-Gimblett 1981; Seitel 1976), such contradictions may exist for a variety of reasons. They show that "All rules have their exceptions," that "Circumstances alter cases," that "One man's meat is another's poison," that there are "Different strokes for different folks," and the like. (1) More importantly, however, contradictory sayings may reveal basic conflicts within a worldview (cf. Barrett 1984: 151-154). Yet the prevalence and significance of contradictions in the saying collections of biblical Proverbs remains largely unstudied. (2) This essay focuses on those sayings in Proverbs which relate wealth and poverty to righteousness and wickedness. The study of this four-fold complex is especially fruitful because it reveals contradictions which embody a fundamental tension concerning recompense for human behavior. Such contradictions should not be glossed over or dissolved by diachronic or social-group analysis. (3) Rather, their significance must be explored (cf. Fox 1989: 10-11). (4)
